Tornado Preparation for Northeast Collin County and Greenville

A tornado can strike at any time if the atmospheric conditions are conducive.  Proper preparedness strategies and actions can potentially save you and your family’s life if executed in advance.

Know the Signs of an Impending Tornado

Tornadoes can form with little warning.  It is important to be alert when storms are in your area especially if a tornado watch or warning is issued by the National Weather Service (NWS).  The following are danger signs that indicate a potential tornado and you and your family should seek shelter immediately:

  • Local Warning Sirens
  • A Funnel Cloud Sighting
  • Roaring Noise Like a Train or Airplane
  • Dark Skies, potentially with a Green Tint
  • Debris
  • Hail

Tornado Preparation Tips

Preparation before a storm is one of the easiest ways to keep you and your family safe.  It will help you remain calm and know what to do when the unthinkable occurs.  Preparation and practice are key.

  • Designate a Safe Room – This is a room that puts the most distance between you and the exterior.
  • Place Essentials in the Safe Room – Emergency Kit, First Aid Kit, Important Documents, etc.
  • Remove Outdoor Items – Reduces the potential of flying debris
  • Reinforce Your Home – Check for weak areas of your home and have them repaired
  • Contact Your Insurance Provider – Make sure you have proper coverage before the storm.

Remember, tornadoes happen quickly.  Once one appears you want to be prepared.
