Signs a Pipe Has Burst

When do most home and business owners realize there is a pipe that has burst?  Visible large puddles or a large volume of water.  Unbeknown to most, there are other signs of this damaging event.  They are a little harder to locate, but if you notice more than one of these issues, you absolutely have a burst pipe.

• Puddles - If a visible puddle grows when water is turned on, then most likely it is a pipe burst. Water tends to pool below a burst but will eventually move through walls.
• Water Pressure Issues – Have you lost water pressure? The loss of water pressure is an indication of a problem. Simply, a pipe burst directly affects the way water travels through the pipes.  Water moves directly through the hole rather than the faucet, which results in lower water pressure.
• Wall or Ceiling Stains – Large water stains, on walls or ceilings, usually indicate a pipe problem. The location of the stain typically points to the location of the pipe burst.
• Water Discoloration – Discolored water is a good indicator of a pipe burst but can point to other issues.
• High Water Bill - High water bills are often a sign of burst pipes.
• Water Smells
• Water Sounds - If you hear a constant drip but know all of your faucets are not the cause, a pipe inside the wall could be the likely cause.

What to Do About A Burst Pipe
