Do You Know the Difference Between Mitigation and Restoration? -  SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/ Greenville

With spring upon us, which brings intense storms and the potential of damage, it is important North Texans know the difference between mitigation and restoration.  Damage can happen other times of the year, but the potential is immensely increased during the spring.

SERVPRO Northeast Collin County/Greenville is the company you can rely on when disaster strikes.  We are prepared to help you get back on your feet, but we also want to provide the information you need to be ready.

Water, Storm, and Fire Damage

If you live in North Texas particularly North Collin County or Greenville, you understand the effects a severe storm or fire can have on you, your family, and your home.  You have probably heard the terms "mitigation" and "restoration" used quite a bit, and you may be unclear about the difference.  Let us take a look at what each means.

Mitigation is your home’s first line of defense after being damaged and includes measures used to stabilize the situation before more damage can occur.  SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville will respond swiftly and take the following steps:

  • Inspecting damage
  • Making sure the structure is stable
  • Boarding up windows
  • Setting up tarps
  • Removing furniture and other items
  • Storing property
  • Extracting water

Additionally, these are the first steps in dealing with the damage, but depending on the seriousness, further work may be required to prevent bigger problems and eliminate the possibility of health effects from mold or other pathogens.

Restoration is the next step after mitigation has been successfully completed.  It is the process in which your property is brought back to the state it was in before the storm damage occurred. SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville will clean and sanitize any parts of the structure that have been exposed to mold, bacteria, or other pathogens, and will disinfect and restore any salvageable items that have been removed.

Unfortunately, the restoration process can be lengthy.  It all depends on the severity of the storm damage.  After everything has been dried and disinfected, repairs range from replacing some drywall and painting to rebuilding entire sections of the structure.

SERVPRO Offers Both

SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville offers both mitigation and restoration. Understanding difference in the two will make the recovery process much easier.

Flooded Hallway with Drying Equipment Commercial Damage Response During the Shutdown

The coronavirus pandemic has affected all of us one way or another.  For commercial entities, the resulting shutdown has been especially detrimental, due to the lack of human oversite.  Employees were required, by the shelter in place order, to stay home leaving businesses and commercial properties empty and vulnerable.  For one north Collin County commercial building this exasperated an unfortunate event.  A water pipe burst in the large commercial building resulting in the unfortunate flooding of two levels of suites and shops. SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville received the call for help at 10:30pm.  We rushed to the scene and worked tirelessly through the night and the next day to stop and mitigate the water damage.

Room by room, suite by suite, office by office, SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville did what was necessary to mitigate further water damage.  We followed specific water mitigation procedures.  Our systematic approach, to water damage cleanup and mitigation, allows SERVPRO to efficiently address the situation regardless of its unique intricacies.   Immediately after the accident occurred, the water damage had started.  To limit this damage, we had to make sure the source of the water problem had been eliminated, corrected, or stopped.  We then proceeded to make sure any affected areas were dried promptly and completely.  The SERVPRO team used only specialized approved equipment in the affected areas, that force in dry air.  This quick decisive action lowered the humidity of the damaged areas and prevented the damage from spreading reducing the chances of mold appearing.  Every water damage situation is different.  We took the step of evaluating the damage and contamination to determine its extent and design a repair plan specifically for the unique situation.  We took pictures of the damage to provide to the insurance company and then began the mitigation process.    During our examination, we looked for structural damage and other severe problems.

During this time of decreased human presence, we recommend, if no one is present inside your commercial building, to have a person(s) assigned for periodic checks and property walks.

Remember, SERVPRO of North Collin County/Greenville is always here to help, day or night if you experience water damage or flooding in your business or home.

When you experience a damage to your home, be sure the team you call in knows their stuff! SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville is highly trained and follows strict industry guide lines and we go through, this 6 step process to make your water loss, "Like it never even happened."

Emergency contact: Call SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville 972-548-6044

The restoration process begins when you call us. SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville is available 24 hours a day for water emergencies, large or small. When you are dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial. Even a delay of a few hours can greatly increase the severity of the water damage.

When you call, we will ask several questions regarding your water damage emergency. These questions will help us determine what equipment and resources to bring, including how many trained SERVPRO Professionals may be needed.

INSPECTION & WATER DAMAGE ASSESSMENT:  When responding to a water damage emergency, we begin with a detailed inspection of your home or property, including a damage assessment. At this stage, our professionals are trying to determine the scope of the damage so that we can develop an appropriate plan of action.

WATER REMOVAL/ WATER EXTRACTION: After the inspection and damage assessment step, the water extraction process begins. This step removes the majority of the water. We use powerful pumps and truck-mounted vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons of water from your property.

DRYING & DEHUMIDIFICATION: Once the excess water has been removed, the floors and walls may appear dry, but a quick inspection will reveal they are wet to the touch. Nearly all building materials, like wood, drywall, and flooring materials, are porous and therefore retain water. This retained water can cause the materials to break down, warp, or cause mold damage.

CLEANING & SANITIZING: Your walls, flooring, and ceiling will most likely require professional cleaning services. In addition to cleaning your property’s structure, we will clean your furniture, upholstery, clothing, and other restorable belongings damaged by the water. Most flooding and water damage also require professional odor removal and deodorization since wet materials have a very distinct odor.

RESTORATION: The final step, is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet, or may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Call SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville 972-548-6044 for all your Cleanup & Restoration needs.

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in United States. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, near a river, or even in the desert, there is always potential for flood damage. FEMA reports in the last five years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. Just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past does not mean you won’t in the future. In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and even just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to $27,000 worth of damages.

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville at 972-548-6044Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville team is prepared to handle any size disaster. When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville will help you take it back! Call today at 972-548-6044.

Candle being lit with match Candles are very pretty and smell great too, but left unattended, they can cause a very serious house fire. Use caution when using candles.

In this blog, we’ll be diving into two of the most common causes of household fires.

Nobody likes to think about the possibility of seeing their home damaged by fire. However, it’s a harsh reality for far too many Americans.

One way you can be proactive in protecting your home is to educate yourself about fire hazards and how to identify them.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, during a five-year period that covered 2011 to 2015, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated 8,700 home structure fires per year that were started by candle usage. All totaled, there were 82 deaths, 800 injuries and $295 million in direct property damage reported.

Of all the candle fires during this time span, 37 percent started in bedrooms and were responsible for 36 percent of the associated deaths and 51 percent of the associated injuries. There were an average of 24 home candle fires reported per day during those five years, with December topping out as the prime time of the year for home fires caused by candles. These fires caused 2 percent of reported home fires, with 3 percent resulting in death and 7 percent with injuries.

Be sure the candle is kept at least one foot away from anything that could burn and is in a sturdy holder that won’t easily tip over. Always blow out all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep—and never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.

Smokers caused fires that resulted in 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in property damage, per the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes. While cooking is the leading cause of home fires, smoking is the leading cause of home fire deaths. In 2014, cigarettes, pipes and cigars caused an estimated 17,200 home structure fires.

One out of four smoking-material fire fatalities is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire. It is the innocent bystander.

The safest place to smoke is outside. Most deaths result from fires that have started in living rooms, family rooms or bedrooms.

Try using fire-safe cigarettes. A deep, sturdy ashtray should be used. Douse all cigarette butts and ashes in water or sand before throwing them away.

While candles and smoking are two of the most common causes of home structure fires, there are also other lesser-known hazards that could be present in your home.

Did you know that some kinds of glassware in your home could be a fire risk? When sunlight passes through them, the concentrated beam could ignite flammable materials, which is why it’s best to keep glass accessories out of direct sunlight.

Another possible fire hazard is dust bunnies collecting near electrical sockets and floor heaters. Regularly vacuuming and cleaning hard-to-reach areas like behind the entertainment system can help prevent buildup.

Watch for loose outlets in your home. The movement of these electrical outlets could loosen the connected wires and create dangerous arcing sparking.

Fire and smoke damage can be devastating to homes. Water damage from firefighting efforts can also cause significant damage. If your home is damaged by fire or smoke, SERVPRO® of Northeast Collin County/Greenville is here for you and to help restore your home to pre-fire condition.
