Mold Remediation -What it is and How it Works

Mold, microscopic mold spores, live almost anywhere. Indoors or outdoors, it doesn’t matter; they will survive.  For this reason, the removal of every spore is virtually impossible, whether residential or commercial. 100% removal of all molds is a falsehood. However, SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville can get remarkably close.

According to USLegal.com, “The term mold remediation is defined as “the removal, cleaning, sanitizing, demolition, or other treatment, including preventive activities, of mold or mold-contaminated matter that was not purposely grown at that location.”

Mold remediation is a science that should be completed by a highly qualified mold restoration company, such as SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville. Our experts understand the intricate science behind mold and mold growth due to the intense training required of each technician. The ultimate goal of mold remediation is to return the structure to normal mold levels that are naturally occurring.

When should a mold inspection and mold testing be considered?

If mold is visible, then you can skip the inspection and go right to remediation. There are multiple other reasons:

  • If there is a musty smell of mold, but it is not visible.
  • Where there has been water damage from a flood, storm, or leak.
  • If someone in the home has a health issue where the cause cannot be immediately found and may be related. Mold symptoms include coughing, sneezing, headaches, etc.
  • Real Estate transactions for buyer and seller protection
  • Post Mold Removal Clearance Testing to ensure that the earlier mold issue has been resolved and mold counts have returned to levels found in healthy environments of the same type.

What is the process of mold remediation?

Every mold damage scenario is unique. Therefore, all solutions are not the same, yet the process is comprehensive and consistent from structure to structure.

HAIL – THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW AND DO IN ADVANCE

Hail Damage Mitigation & Things You Can Do

Do You Know What to Do Before Hail Strikes?

Spring is hail season in North Texas.  However, hail can happen any time of the year.  Do you know what to do to mitigate damage before a hailstorm?

SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville is the company you can rely on when disaster strikes.  We are prepared to help you get back on your feet, but we also want to provide the information you need to be ready in case of hail damage.

Steps to Hail Damage Mitigation

Here are some important steps to consider and remember before hail strikes.

The question is no when will hail strike your home, but when?  You cannot worry about it all the time, but there are things you can do in advance to minimize some of the potential damage.  It is important to not worry about the things you cannot control, like when and the size of the hailstones.  Appropriate preparation ahead of time can help reduce damage and save you money.

  • Trim Trees and Shrubs - Loose or dead branches, from trees and shrubs, can fall and damage the roof or windows of your home. Reduce the risk by keeping trees and shrubs trimmed and away from your home.  Additionally, any limbs that have fallen should be removed so they do not become flying objects in a strong wind.
  • Cover Over Areas - Cover any objects or areas you deem worth protecting. If roof damage has already occurred, cover over the affected area. A tarp or plywood is good for protection.  The extra material can provide a layer of protection against possible hail as well as help prevent additional moisture from getting in.
  • Close All Windows - If hail is predicted, close and ensure all windows in your home are closed and secure. This can help prevent hail from bouncing inside and causing additional damage.
  • Move Vehicles to a Sheltered Location or in Your Garage - If possible, or feasible, move your vehicles should into your garage or a sheltered location.

Be secure in knowing you took the actions necessary to make your home as ready as possible and mitigate damage.

When the Time Comes, We are Here!

Mold Inspector –              What to Look for

What is the job of a professional mold inspector?  This is the person you bring in to determine the extent of damage and make professional recommendations.  Professional recommendation by the inspector will be dictated by the level of damage and required mold removal.  A professional investigator will have the appropriate equipment necessary to take samples, but should have the right knowledge and meet certain criteria:

  • Be credentialed to offer inspection services and able to show documentation of industry-specific education
  • Have no official affiliation to a mold remediation provider for an objective recommendation
  • Produce an informative and detailed report based on samples taken
  • Provide objective findings about the degree of mold damage

A typical mold inspector charges from $200 to $600 for a job that lasts from two to six hours.

Full Scale Mold Remediation

A mold inspector may be required to cut your walls to accurately assess and determine if mold removal is necessary. Air samples can cost up to $150 per sample, which may or may not be included in the overall price. Be sure to ask this question at the outset.

The right provider will not recommend black mold removal if is not required.  The inspector sets the direction and action plan for the remediation.  SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County / Greenville is the trusted mold cleanup company that has the experience, tools, and know-how to restore your home or business to pre-damage conditions. Depending on the source of the mold growth, your property insurance may cover some or all of the costs for cleanup.

Know the Signs

Tornadoes can form with little warning.  It is important to be alert when storms are in your area especially if a tornado watch or warning is issued by the National Weather Service (NWS).  The following are danger signs that indicate a potential tornado and you and your family should seek shelter immediately:

  • Local Warning Sirens

  • Hail

Tornado Preparation Tips

Preparation before a storm is one of the easiest ways to keep you and your family safe.  It will help you remain calm and know what to do when the unthinkable occurs.  Preparation and practice are key.

  1. Designate a Safe Room – This is a room that puts the most distance between you and the exterior.
  2. Place Essentials in the Safe Room – Emergency Kit, First Aid Kit, Important Documents, etc.
  3. Remove Outdoor Items – Reduces the potential of flying debris

Princeton commercial property owners should contact SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County / Greenville as soon as possible when water intrusion is discovered especially when discovered in an area where water is not normally seen.

Every water remediation process, in Princeton, begins with an assessment and estimate.  The process continues through the entire process, from mitigation to restoration.

Water Restoration and Remediation – Princeton

The water restoration process, or remediation, is described as the extraction of standing water, cleaning of the distressed area, and either drying or removing water-soaked building materials and contents.  Building materials, if damp, may require removal.  The level of damage does not affect the necessary steps in the water restoration process.  Water restoration begins with the assistance of trained professionals engaged in the protection against mold and other water-related damage.  Our team of professionals has unfettered access to pumps for extracting large amounts of water and debris, as well as a full range of exceptional cleaning and drying equipment.

Common Damage Caused by Water

Princeton commercial businesses finding themselves in a situation necessitating water restoration service, need to know the primary causes of water damage.  The primary three common causes of water damage include damaged roofing, faulty plumbing fixtures, or broken appliances.  Damaged roofing could be the result of hail or high winds, in Princeton, which is quite common during the spring.  Water damage severity has been broken down into three categories defined by the level of contamination.

  • Category One: water damage results when clean water leaks from a broken pipe or supply line.
  • Category Two: damage involves contaminated, non-potable gray water from a broken appliance, bath, shower, toilet, or roof that may contain chemicals and microbes.
  • Category Three: incidents involve highly contaminated floodwater or sewer backups that may contain solid waste.

Signs You Need Princeton Commercial Water Restoration

Have you spotted pooling or puddling water?  Pooling or puddling water is a visible sign of ongoing water damage.  Is there the smell of a musty odor?  This smell may suggest a hidden structural leak is causing mold to flourish behind walls. This is precisely why water damage has the potential to be dangerous.  Standing water presents health and safety risks.  The immediate threat by standing water is the potential risk of slip and fall.  Not to say the least, if it is not discovered right away, it can be the ideal environment for potentially harmful bacteria and fungi to multiply and spread.  These safety reasons are why hiring SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County / Greenville is extremely important.

Princeton Water Restoration

After discussing the negatives of water damage and why Princeton water restoration is necessary, what precautions, as a home or business owner, can you take?

  • Be aware of the age of plumbing and the materials.  Perform regular inspections of pipes and appliances

It’s important to lower the humidity of a damaged area to prevent the damage from spreading further. However, before the dehumidification process can begin, we must make sure that the sources of the water problem have been corrected or stopped. This can include areas that have water flowing into a building, leaks, plumbing and roof.  We will then assess the extent of the damage and contamination to put together a repair plan designed specifically for your unique situation. We will take pictures of the damage to provide to your insurance company and then begin the mitigation process.  We need to examine for structural damage and other severe problems. The Emergency Kit

2/1/2018 (Permalink)

emergency kit containing basic necessities like canned food, water, blankets, flashlights and matches Are you prepared???

Everyone needs to have an emergency kit handy, on top of an emergency plan, in case of a disaster that leaves you without food, water, and basic necessities for a few days. Every emergency kit should have enough supplies to last AT LEAST 72 hours! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Non-perishable food
  • Manual can opener
  • Water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Battery or hand crank radio
  • Flashlights
  • Extra batteries
  • Wrench or pliers
  • Gloves (work or garden)
  • Medications
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle
  • Dust masks
  • Local maps
  • Battery/solar phone charger
  • Personal toiletry items (TP is a must!)
  • Pet supplies if applicable
  • Blankets

When creating your emergency kit, keep in mind the number of people the kit will be for as that will change the amount of items needed in that kit. For example: each person should have a gallon of water a day, so if you have 5 people that means you would need 15 gallons of water for 3 days! For food each person needs enough food to last 3 days. That could be 15 cans of soup, 9 granola bars, and 21 tablespoons of peanut butter per person (hint: make sure its food your family will actually eat so it doesn’t go to waste)!

You’ll also need a 3 day supplies of batteries enough for your cell phone chargers, radio, and flashlight or lights. Make sure to keep your kit in an easy to carry container such as a backpack or storage box with handles (TIP: a 10 gallon bucket from a hardware store holds a lot)! Be sure to re-think your needs every time your family has a change. Also, keep it easily accessible in a cool, dry place such as your basement, garage, or closet!

This is a extremely basic kit that covers the bare minimum and every family will have different needs for their kit. Be sure to put time and thought into making your emergency kit. SERVPRO aims to keep your family safe and sound during times of disaster! We are here to help no matter the size of the job! Stay alert and stay safe!
