What Is Water Damage Restoration in Princeton (Remediation)?

The water restoration process, or remediation, is described as the extraction of standing water, cleaning of the distressed area, and either drying or removing water-soaked building materials and contents.  Building materials, if damp, may require removal.  The level of damage does not affect the necessary steps in the water restoration process.  Water restoration begins with the assistance of trained professionals engaged in the protection against mold and other water-related damage.  Our team of professionals has unfettered access to pumps for extracting large amounts of water and debris, as well as a full range of exceptional cleaning and drying equipment.

  • Category One: water damage results when clean water leaks from a broken pipe or supply line.
  • Category Two: damage involves contaminated, non-potable gray water from a broken appliance, bath, shower, toilet, or a roof that may contain chemicals and microbes.

Flood Remediation – Do You Know What to Do to Stay Safe?

Staying Safe During Flood Cleanup, Important Tips

Not much is more devastating than a flood. Do you, your family, or your employees know what to do when a flood happens? Your life could depend on it.

Yes, you are required, by your insurance provider, to take quick action to mitigate the damage.  However, your first job is to keep everyone safe.  Human nature will make you tempted to start cleaning up your flooded home or office as soon as possible but fight the temptation.  Honestly, flood situations can pose serious health hazards.

Follow These Tips To Stay Safe During Flood Cleanup

  • Know the Risk – Contaminated floodwater appear clean. Looks can be deceiving. Intruding water contains bacteria and other microorganisms and potentially polluted with chemical pollutants.  If the floodwater is the result of a broken pipe, there is a high probability it contains human waste or other organic matter.
  • Wear Protective Gear - Waterproof gloves, rubber boots and goggles are recommended by the CDC in prevention of bacterial infections. Additionally, as added precaution, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing a splash-proof face shield and liquid-repellent coveralls. Before leaving the flood site, remove all protective gear and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Call in the Pros – A prompt call to SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County / Greenville will set the remediation ball in motion towards returning things to normal. Our team has the necessary training, equipment, and experience to handle your flooding problem quickly and safely.
  • Safe Hygiene, Practice it!
  • Wash your hands with soap and water after handling anything that has touched floodwater.
  • Never eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum during flood cleanup.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before eating, and before and after using the restroom.

What is the best practice for flood cleanup and safety?  Keep you, your family, and your employees safe and let the experts at SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County / Greenville handle the job of working with potentially contaminated floodwaters. However, if you must enter your flooded company, be sure to take the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe.

Signs a Pipe Has Burst

When do most home and business owners realize there is a pipe that has burst?  Visible large puddles or a large volume of water.  Unbeknown to most, there are other signs of this damaging event.  They are a little harder to locate, but if you notice more than one of these issues, you absolutely have a burst pipe.

  • Puddles - If a visible puddle grows when water is turned on, then most likely it is a pipe burst. Water tends to pool below a burst but will eventually move through walls.
  • Water Pressure Issues – Have you lost water pressure? The loss of water pressure is an indication of a problem. Simply, a pipe burst directly affects the way water travels through the pipes.  Water moves directly through the hole rather than the faucet, which results in lower water pressure.
  • Wall or Ceiling Stains – Large water stains, on walls or ceilings, usually indicate a pipe problem. The location of the stain typically points to the location of the pipe burst.
  • Water Discoloration – Discolored water is a good indicator of a pipe burst but can point to other issues.
  • High Water Bill - High water bills are often a sign of burst pipes.
  • Water Smells
  • Water Sounds - If you hear a constant drip but know all of your faucets are not the cause, a pipe inside the wall could be the likely cause.
  • Pipe Noises

What to Do About A Burst Pipe

First, turn off the main water valve.  Second, call a plumber to find and fix the issue quickly.  The idea here is to minimize and mitigate the damage.  Remember, your insurance provider expects you to do what is necessary to keep the damage as minimal as possible.

Further steps you should take:

  • Stop the source of the flooding
  • Disconnect all electrical
  • Salvage anything you can from the flood zone
  • Contact your insurance company
  • Document everything
  • Remove standing water
  • Call SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville (972)548-6044
  • Start drying to prevent mold and mildew

Tips to Mitigation After a Natural Disaster

SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County / Greenville is dedicated to helping you understand what to do after a natural disaster.

Unfortunately, when a natural disaster occurs, homeowners will face some very serious impacts: physical displacement, loss of property, financial uncertainty, and stress. Truly, you can never take too many precautions ahead of a natural disaster.

Are there additional steps you should be taking? What resources are available to you in the wake of a disaster?

Luckily, there's a wealth of information out there to help homeowners minimize the effect as well as strengthen their property's resistance to extreme wind, rain, and other climatic forces.

Tips for Before and After a Natural Disaster

We have compiled a list of tips and essential steps you can take before and after a natural disaster.

Before:

  • Create a disaster preparedness plan for your home or property ahead of time. Following a checklist in times of crisis can help focus your attention and keep you from missing important details.
  • Check your insurance coverage
  • Print important information and documents ahead of time. Disasters often cause power outages and service disruptions.

After:

  • Secure your property. Your two most important tasks immediately following a natural disaster are to ensure the safety and security of your family and to keep valuables and important documents from the debris heap.
  • Call your insurance company and register with FEMA. File a claim with your insurance company as soon as possible. If your area was included in a national disaster declaration, you'll then want to register and apply for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Guidance, housing assistance, and more can be found at FEMA's Disaster Recovery Centers after a national disaster.

Mold Inspector –                What to Look for

What is the job of a professional mold inspector?  This is the person you bring in to determine the extent of damage and make professional recommendations.  Professional recommendation by the inspector will be dictated by the level of damage and required mold removal.  A professional investigator will have the appropriate equipment necessary to take samples, but should have the right knowledge and meet certain criteria:

  • Be credentialed to offer inspection services and able to show documentation of industry-specific education
  • Have no official affiliation to a mold remediation provider for an objective recommendation
  • Produce an informative and detailed report based on samples taken
  • Provide objective findings about the degree of mold damage

A typical mold inspector charges from $200 to $600 for a job that lasts from two to six hours.

Full Scale Mold Remediation

A mold inspector may be required to cut your walls to accurately assess and determine if mold removal is necessary. Air samples can cost up to $150 per sample, which may or may not be included in the overall price. Be sure to ask this question at the outset.

The right provider will not recommend black mold removal if is not required.  The inspector sets the direction and action plan for the remediation.  SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County / Greenville is the trusted mold cleanup company that has the experience, tools, and know-how to restore your home to pre-damage conditions. Depending on the source of the mold growth, your property insurance may cover some or all of the costs for cleanup.

Steps to Hail Damage Mitigation

Here are some important steps to consider and remember before hail strikes.

It is not a question of when will hail strike your home, but when will it happen.  You cannot worry about it all the time, but there are things you can do in advance to minimize some of the potential damage.  It is important to not worry about the things you cannot control, like when and the size of the hailstones.  Appropriate preparation ahead of time can help reduce damage and save you money.

Trim Trees and Shrubs

Loose or dead branches, from trees and shrubs, can fall and damage the roof or windows of your home.  Reduce the risk by keeping trees and shrubs trimmed and away from your home.  Additionally, any limbs that have fallen should be removed so they do not become flying objects in a strong wind.

Cover Over Areas

Cover any objects or areas you deem worth protecting. If roof damage has already occurred, cover over the affected area.  A tarp or plywood is good for protection.  The extra material can provide a layer of protection against possible hail as well as help prevent additional moisture from getting in.

Close All Windows

If hail is predicted, close and ensure all windows in your home are closed and secure.  This can help prevent hail from bouncing inside and causing additional damage.

Flooded salon suite hall This salon suite flooded two stories from one rinsing station leak. Urgency is key.

Of all the disasters that could impact a business in North Collin County, TX, water damage is among the most common scenarios. It includes situations such as flooding, a leaking roof, a major storm, a sewage backup and more. Even seemingly innocuous clean water has a corrosive affect on materials and if left untreated can cause extensive damage. Dirty water from sewage pipes or flooding can be even more harmful and could have a deleterious effect on human health. In all instances, the services of a local water mitigation company are invaluable.

The Importance of a Fast Response

The saying "Faster to Any Size Disaster" defines our team and exemplifies the urgency necessary in an emergency. A rapid response that brings trained technicians to the site in less than four hours is the best way to limit damage caused by water. Some or all of the following steps may be needed to take care of the situation:

  • Inspection and damage assessment
  • Board-up or tarp services for security and to prevent further damage
  • Water removal or extraction
  • Mold remediation
  • Professional drying
  • Cleaning and sanitizing

Water can damage materials in as little as two days. The growth of mold can begin in a similar time frame and begin to spread into damp areas of the building. If broken pipes cause raw sewage to be present, this requires the removal of the dirty water to protect human health.

The Value of a Comprehensive Water Cleanup

To return the commercial property to its original condition, all steps in the cleanup process must be completed. Water damage can continue to produce negative effects if moisture remains behind walls and under floors. Odors can remain if the cleaning and sanitizing treatments did not follow the standards in place for professional restoration. It is especially important to remain vigilant concerning mold growth. A comprehensive and professional cleanup ensures the building is safe for workers and employees.

Lavon Water Damage Restoration: Understanding Water Damage and the Damage It Can Cause.

SERVPRO can rapidly evaluate the damage from a severe water event and begin the mitigation and recovery procedure.  The mitigation procedure starts with the removal of any salvageable items and start working with your insurance company.  There is no better sense than knowing you have a team standing by you.  We are often asked, what damage can water do to a structure?  When a pipe bursts or a flood occurs, water enters and spreads throughout, resulting in the staining of carpets, upholstery, books and other items. Wooden furniture swells when touched by water and begins to disintegrate and unprotected metal surfaces tarnish.  If not addressed in a timely manner, mold and bacteria grows and generates unpleasant odors, placing you and your employees at severe health risk.  The beginning of mold and bacteria growth is that musty smell your smelling.  Another adverse effect of water intrusion is the possibility of structural damage, and if left unaddressed, doors, windows, frames, and walls will ultimately begin to warp or even break. Thus, addressing the problem to prevent further damage is very important.  Water also leaves behind unseen damage, which is only noticed by the discoloration in walls or unpleasant odors. When Water Damage Strikes.... | SERVPRO® of Northeast Collin County/Greenville

Did you know that flooding is the most common disaster affecting the United States? And with flooding comes water damage—and potential effects on health and wellness.

Mold growth is among the health hazards attributed to water damage. There are negative symptoms of mold exposure. Once water damage occurs, whether from a flood or a leak, mold can set in within 24 hours.

But mold growth doesn’t have to be inevitable following water damage. There are some steps you can take:

Consult a Professional Immediately

You may think you’d notice an odor if mold was present, but that’s not always the case. That’s why calling in a professional team after water damage is essential.

While you may be able to salvage carpet following water damage, experts recommend at least a replacement of the carpet pad in most situations.

This is a more cost-effective option than replacing the entire carpet, but it’s not always a safe choice. A professional can help you make the best decision for your home.

Tread Carefully

  • Do NOT re-enter your home or office until water has completely receded and officials have declared doing so safe.
  • Document damage for insurance purposes, using photos and video.

Starting Drying Things Out

  • Bring in fans, dehumidifiers and heaters to help speed up the drying time.
  • Keep windows and doors open to allow air in if weather allows.
  • Before the professional cleanup crew arrives, vacuum up what you can with a heavy-duty wet/dry vacuum.

Sort Through Items

  • Porous materials like wood, upholstery, and paper of any kind, can trap mold and should be tossed out.
  • Metal, plastic and glass, on the other hand, are not absorbent and can often be cleaned, disinfected and reused.
  • While you can dry out carpet and rugs, keep in mind that doing so may not stifle mold growth.

If you need help after water damage and/or mold growth, SERVPRO® of Northeast Collin County/Greenville can help you restore your home back to normal.  SERVPRO® of Northeast Collin County/Greenville is currently servicing our clients in Melissa, Princeton and Parker Texas that have recently had water damage to their homes.

storm cloud from space The Importance of Understanding Storm Damage

Texas is no stranger to devastating storms. There’s no better way to prepare for a storm is to know what exactly is coming. There are ten different types of storms with unique causes and that cause create mostly, water damage.

SERVPRO® of Northeast Collin County/Greenville knows the importance of keeping a home and business safe before, during, and after a storm. Continue reading to learn more about different storm types and storm and there resulting water damage.

The 10 most common storms are hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, snow storms, hail storms, thunderstorms, lightning storms, tropical storms, ice storms, and Derecho storms.

Depending on where a person lives in the state, they likely won’t experience each type of storm in a lifetime. You may even be wondering what a Derecho storm is. (Simply, it’s one monster storm made up of many smaller but still large storms. To be considered a Derecho, these multiple storms must rage at over 58 miles per hour and cross 240 miles. Suffice to say, they are vast.)

Some storm damage effects are obvious, like how hail breaks a window or lightning and thunderstorms cause power outages.

But since hurricanes can have such far-reaching effects (like how Hurricane Sandy impacted 24 states), it’s particularly important to be informed on the damage they can cause. It’s important to be educated on all types of storm and the damage they cause, but this blog will focus on hurricane damage - whether you experience a hurricane’s immediate effects or the aftermath.

These are Most Common Causes of Storm Damage from Hurricanes:

Storm Surge

Storm surge is generally felt most by those who live on the coast that is directly hit by a hurricane. Storm surge happens when wind drives so much water to the shore that it causes the water to pile up far past the predicted tide level. The force of this water is so powerful that it can cause tremendous water damage and destroy buildings and other structures.

Flooding

Floods from a hurricane often are directly tied to storm surge. Storm surge can force extra water past the normal tide levels, onto the shore and even far inland. The accompanying heavy rainfall also contributes heavily to flooding. Rainfall caused by hurricanes can impact an area even 100 miles from where the hurricane landed, causing widespread flooding. But a tropical storm does not have to reach hurricane levels to cause heavy rain and floods.

Wind

Wind caused by hurricanes can often reach speeds between 74 - 155 miles per hour. The powerful speed and force of storm winds can uproot trees, fell power lines, and hurl debris. Objects moved by wind can cause damage like broken windows or damaged roofs. The wind during a storm can also be powerful enough to lift the roof off your house. Often, these damaging winds are caused by tornadoes that form because of the hurricane.

The damage caused by storm surge, floods, and strong winds can be unexpected. This is why it is important to take necessary precautions like packing an emergency preparedness kit, installing storm-resistant features on your home, and following any official warnings at the onset of a storm.

Water damage and the other types of damage in the aftermath of a storm can be excessive and overwhelming. Cleanup can also be dangerous. SERVPRO® of Northeast Collin County/Greenville is the leading expert in storm damage restoration.  SERVPRO® of Northeast Collin County/Greenville is currently servicing clients in Anna, Farmersville and Murphy Texas, due to the recent rainfall in the North Texas area.

Is My Hot Water Heater Too Old?

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

old water heater with rust Don't let it get to this point....

What are the Warning Signs?

Usually the time period near the end of the manufacturer’s warranty is when most water heaters experience problems with leaks or a sudden burst of the tank, this is usually around 12 years after date of purchase. Unfortunately, the average age of all installed water heaters is 13 years old (crazy we know)! Leaking supply lines are another telling sign of potential failure (watch for those water drips). LISTEN FOR NOISES- other then the normal hiss's your water heater should NOT make knocking noises. If it is that could mean its getting close to leaking! Beat it to the punch and get it checked!!!

What are some Solutions?

Schedule a water heater inspection every two years, then annually after the warranty expires. Perform regular maintenance (e.g., flushing out sediments and inspecting the heater’s anode rod) to increase life expectancy, and inspect valves to ensure proper operations. FUN TIP: use ball valves in place of gate valves whenever possible.

Every second counts when protecting yourself against harmful water damage and mold that you may not even realize is there! From Commerce to McKinney, Wolfe City to Wylie, and everywhere in between, we are ready to help! Give us a call- (972)548-6044.

Unlike other damage to your home or business, water damage requires a unique course of action. We work hard to make it seen "Like it never even happened."

STEP 1- Emergency Contact

We Are Ready to Help

The restoration process begins when you call us. SERVPRO of North East Collin County/Greenville is available 24 hours a day for water emergencies of any size. When you are dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial. Even a delay of a few hours can greatly increase the seriousness of the water damage. A water emergency can be chaotic and traumatic, and when you call us, we understand you may be feeling disoriented, stressed, and helpless. SERVPRO of North East Collin County/Greenville’s representatives have the specific training and experience to help you through this difficult time. We specialize in water damage restoration—in fact, it's the cornerstone of our business.

Our SERVPRO Representative will ask several questions:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Your insurance information (if applicable)
  • The street address of the water-damaged home or business
  • When did the flooding or water damage occur?
  • What caused the water damage (if known)
  • Is there electricity available (on-site)?
  • Step 2 - Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

We determine the extent of your water damage at this stage. We inspect and test to determine the range of damage and how far the moisture has traveled to ensure proper and complete restoration.

1) Stop the Source

2) Check for Contaminated Water

3) Identify the Type of Water

We will identify the category and classification of water damage to ensure our professionals restore your property based on industry guidelines. The level of contamination of the water will affect the type of restoration processes we use. Levels of contamination are broken down into 3 categories:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 3: "Black Water"

We inspect and run tests to determine the extent of damage and how far the moisture has traveled to make sure we use the right process to complete restoration.

4) Survey Damage

5) Complete Safety Inspection

6) Move or Block Furniture

We move furniture and property contents and block items to help prevent rust or furniture stains on wet carpet.

  • Step 3 - Water Removal / Water Extraction

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We use powerful pump and vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons from your property, which helps to prevent secondary water damage and mold growth.

  • Step 4 - Drying and De-humidification

We use specialized equipment to remove the remaining water that is harder to access. Our Professionals will use room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the optimal number of air movers and dehumidifiers needed to dry your home or business.

Once the excess water has been removed, the floors and walls may appear dry, but a quick inspection will reveal they are wet to the touch. Nearly all building materials, like wood, drywall, and flooring materials, are porous and therefore retain water. This retained water can cause the materials to break down, warp, cause mold, or other damage.

  • Step 5 - Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean all of the restorable items and structures damaged by the water. We are exceptional when it comes to cleaning and restoring due to the fact we use a number of techniques. Our professionals are also trained to provide sanitizing treatments and to deodorize your property.

Your walls, flooring, and ceiling will most likely require professional cleaning services. In addition to cleaning your property’s structure, we will clean your furniture, upholstery, clothing, and other restorable belongings damaged by the water. Most flooding and water damage also require professional odor removal and deodorization since wet materials have a very distinct odor.

  • Step 6 - Restoration

Restoration is the final step. This is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet, or may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

SERVPRO of Northeast Collin County/Greenville simplifies the restoration process by handling both the initial water damage mitigation and rebuilding process. Having one qualified company for both can save time and keep costs low. We can provide this continuity by supervising a full range of restoration services that will bring a building back to full splendor and functionality, "Like it never even happened".

My Toilet overflowed! Now what?

2/1/2018 (Permalink)

Bathroom floor with hidden water damage after a toilet overflowed Hidden damage from an overflowed toilet!

An overflowed toilet is never convenient and can actually be dangerous if not properly handled! So what steps should you take to make sure you've gotten complete control over a stinky situation? SERVPRO is here to help answer that question.

  • STEP 1: Shut off the water

Now this step does not require you to shut off water to your whole house. There is actually a spot behind the toilet near the base that you can do this from. It may not seem like an appealing idea to get close to the overflowing toilet water, but it is necessary to keep damage from spreading even further.

  • STEP 2: Mop up what you can

Mopping up as much of the water as you can is a key step to making sure the damage does not spread even further into other areas. Letting a ton of water sit can cause major damage to the affected area!

  • STEP 3: Call the experts at SERVPRO

Now that all the water is mopped up do you just call it a day and move on? NO! Unfortunately, mopping up the water is not the last step in dealing with an overflown toilet. What a lot of people don't think about when a toilet overflows, is the fact that the water has most likely spread to areas unseen (example behind baseboards or even under the flooring)! Always be sure to call in the experts when your toilet overflows so we can make sure that the effected area will not end up getting worse due to unseen water damage. We doubt anyone would like to find mold later down the line. Just give us a call at (972)548-6044.

Always be sure to take the proper steps to make sure you're covered when accidents happen. No matter the damage, big or small, SERVPRO will be there to make it "Like it never even happened."
